ATELIER FAIRE SAVOIR 1 / Sallaumines / workshop

Graduation project, director: Philippe Comte, Ensci-les ateliers.
June 2015 – March 2016.

Each year, in France, about 63% of craftmen retire without transmitting their business. Now, traineeships that lead to those jobs are unvalued and people are often oriented to it by default without any live experience of the material and job.

The “FAIRE SAVOIR” workshop is a first step to professional traineeships, conducted by experienced senior. It takes place in a neighborhood during the week-end, and offer an initiation to a know-how, though the fabrication of an object. Thanks to a collaboration with different local organizations and people, it has been tested in 2 cities of the north of France to transmit the know-how of industrial boiler through the fabrication of trestles.

I designed with the city senior identified (to have a specific know-how) the content of initiations workshops through an object that will help the formation, chosen collectively by neighborhood’s people (ex: the trestle is a very common object in popular party of the north of France). The fabrication process will offer to apprentice a global overview of tools and techniques. A manual of the initiation will be built to help the pedagogic process.

The supporting structure is a network of non profit association, mutualizing methods and web platform. It has developed a range of mobile furniture enabling to quickly instal a workshop in a variety of spaces and for many types of know-how, to go out where people are. It includes a workbench, a “shop” to organize and display tools, and space structuration and sign system modules. Finally, it help local traineeship organizations to produce their own workshop’s furniture with their apprentice.
